Keeping with tradition, the stated meeting of the Society in March was\u00a0Ladies Night.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0program for the evening was the presentation of the Robert Tunnicliffe Heritage Foundation award\u00a0to Fiona Beaton.\u00a0 You may read more about Fiona in the Foundation section of\u00a0our website.\u00a0 Our Stewards prepared and presented a wonderful\u00a0buffet that was enjoyed by all at the adjournment of the\u00a0meeting.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0third floor project is now mainly completed with a few additions to the\u00a0area to\u00a0be made in\u00a0the next few months.\u00a0 The Stewards have already put the kitchen to good use since it was made available for the general use of the Society.\u00a0 The report of the architect who\u00a0has been\u00a0evaluating the ground floor area\u00a0will be presented to the membership in May.<\/p>\n

On the social scene, we enjoyed the St. Patrick’s Day parade that passed\u00a0by\u00a0the Rooms on March 16.\u00a0 Our members\u00a0rose to the occasion and prepared\u00a0tasty\u00a0refreshments for the event.\u00a0\u00a0A Malt Tasting was held in the\u00a0Wee Kitchen on April 16.\u00a0 Members and guests were introduced to two new malts.<\/p>\n

We\u00a0continue to work on the library project with the\u00a0goal of making our historic library available to the public as a research library.\u00a0\u00a0News of our progress will be\u00a0posted as\u00a0we move ahead.<\/p>\n

The program for our Past Presidents’ dinner will be the award-winning musician, educator and arts consultant, Ms. Maureen McMullan.\u00a0 Ms. McMullan,\u00a0born in Coatbridge, Scotland,\u00a0works as\u00a0an Artist-in-Residence and Music Archivist for the National\u00a0Trust for Scotland USA and as a member of the musical ensemble Atlantic Seaway.\u00a0 She was a lead vocalist in the hit PBS-TV music special “Highland Heartbeat” and recently made her acclaimed debut singing lead vocals with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall for Joseph Sohm’s “Vision of America.”<\/p>\n

Our House Committee and Garden\u00a0Committee are busy at work after a long winter.\u00a0 We are looking forward to many pleasant events in the garden this summer.<\/p>\n

We were saddened to learn of the death of G. Carroll Lindsay, President of the St. Andrew\u2019s Society of the City of Albany from 1983-1985.\u00a0 The following obituary was carried in the \u201cIntelligencer Journal\/Lancaster New Era.\u201d<\/p>\n

G. Carroll Lindsay, 84, of Strasburg, died on Saturday, January 19, 2013 while under the care of Hospice & Community Care. He was the husband of the late Edythe (Welbourne) Lindsay, who died in 2010.<\/p>\n

Born in Coatesville, Carroll was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Copeland) Lindsay. He is survived by a sister, Jacqueline L. Wilson of Manheim and two nephews, Ken Wilson of Christiana, PA, and Walter Wilson of Lewes, De, and six grand nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n

Carroll and Edythe moved to Strasburg from Albany, New York, where they had resided for 20 years.<\/p>\n

Carroll was graduated from West Fallowfield High School, Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Delaware. He was an assistant Curator of Ethnology and as assistant Curator of Cultural History at Winterthur Museum.<\/p>\n

Carroll served as Director of Museum Services of the Smithsonian Institute and as Director of Museum Services for the New York State Museum. Upon retirement from there, he served as an Executive Director of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Long Island, New York.<\/p>\n

After retiring to Strasburg, he enjoyed membership in the Strasburg Heritage Society. He was former President of Strasburg Borough Council. Carroll also enjoyed serving as a Trustee of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church.<\/p>\n

Carroll was a member and Clerk of Session of the Fallowfield Society of Friends.<\/p>\n

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Strasburg, PA<\/p>\n

SOCIETY PAVER INSTALLED IN MEMORIAL IN PHILADELPHIA<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Society membership contributed to provide a memorial paver in the National Scottish Immigrants Memorial monument which was unveiled on October 8, 2011 in a small park near Penn\u2019s Landing in Philadelphia.\u00a0 Our paver has now been installed .\u00a0 The monument consists of four life-size figures standing on a 6x6x4 foot granite base and depicts a Scottish family preparing for life in the New World.\u00a0 The memorial pavers are in a brick walkway that leads to the monument.\u00a0 The statue is sponsored by the St. Andrew\u2019s Society of Philadelphia founded in 1747.<\/p>\n

Our paver was designed by our Society member, Dr. Brian McCandless.<\/p>\n
