PRESIDENT\u2019S MESSAGE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Greetings Gentlemen of the Society:<\/p>\n

This is my first newsletter as the incoming president of St. Andrews Society and\u00a0I write\u00a0this was great pride.\u00a0I think we will all see some changes coming over the next year or 2\u00a0and with the guidance of the past presidents I think that we will be able to make some improvements. Our\u00a0next meeting will be on this Thursday\u00a01\/11\/18.\u00a0I hope to see most of you there\u00a0for our first meeting of the new year.\u00a0We have several goals\u00a0for our meetings. The\u00a0first is to make the meeting more fluid and the second somewhat more entertaining.\u00a0There have been a number of suggestions about\u00a0shortening some of the\u00a0rote parts of the meeting. To this end,\u00a0starting now,\u00a0the minutes of the previous meeting will be emailed to the membership\u00a0prior to the\u00a0bimonthly\u00a0regular membership meetings. It will be the responsibility of the members to review the\u00a0minutes and if there are any questions or corrections related to the minutes this will definitely be discussed\u00a0at the meeting.\u00a0If no corrections are felt to be necessary I will simply ask for a motion to except those\u00a0minutes rather than having the secretary have to\u00a0repeat the details.\u00a0Going forward we will also discuss the possibility of having\u00a0some type of\u00a0presentation from the treasurer presented beforehand.<\/p>\n

Many of the meetings recently have been held without any form of entertainment. There has been a\u00a0program committee in the past but this has not been active over the past several years.\u00a0I have asked Norm Rice to chair a new program committee with additional members including Jay Higle,\u00a0Jack\u00a0McEneny, and Gordie Peters.\u00a0I would hope that we would be able to\u00a0have a schedule of programs\u00a0for at least 6 months to a year\u00a0so the members would know what they can expect at the upcoming meetings. This group will also be very important in helping us obtain quality entertainment for our major events as well.\u00a0Anyone who has a specific interest\u00a0in presenting or a topic that they would like to have presented\u00a0is strongly encouraged to contact the members of the program committee\u00a0with their suggestions.\u00a0I have purchased a projector for the society which hopefully will be here in time for next week’s meeting. This will be available for power point\u00a0or photo presentations by\u00a0guests or members.\u00a0Dow Smith has kindly\u00a0agreed to\u00a0give us a presentation this\u00a0coming Thursday\u00a0of his travels through Scotland.<\/p>\n

We have just come off 2 very successful gatherings. St. Andrews\u00a0Nicht on\u00a0November 30\u00a0was well attended\u00a0and a delight for all. We were in the main dining room at the Fort Orange club this year\u00a0which was\u00a0a treat. We were also entertained by James Ruff\u00a0with his Gaelic songs and the Celtic Harp.\u00a0James is a professor of music at\u00a0Vassar College and put on a wonderful presentation.\u00a0We also\u00a0had a very successful\u00a0Christmas party with fine\u00a0foods, comradery, and carols\u00a0on\u00a012\/17 at the rooms. \u00a0I do believe that a good time was had by all and I hope that this will become a regular event.<\/p>\n

On Burn’s night,\u00a0January 25,\u00a0we will be meeting at\u00a0the Normanside\u00a0Country Club\u00a0in Delmar for our annual\u00a0Burns Supper. This dinner is being organized by our second vice president, Mr. Andrew Patterson\u00a0and the\u00a0reservations have gone out\u00a0in the mail.\u00a0Please have them back by\u00a0January 15\u00a0or bring a check with you\u00a0on Thursday.\u00a0Please remember that we have\u00a0had an auction\u00a0at the time of the Burns night dinner for the last few years. This has been a very successful means of raising additional\u00a0funds\u00a0and\u00a0defraying the cost of the event.\u00a0Anyone who has an item\u00a0to offer\u00a0for the auction is invited to bring that with them.\u00a0Also, please bring\u00a0your check books so that you can bid on these items.\u00a0Lastly it is traditional for the members to\u00a0step up to the open mike on Burns night\u00a0to\u00a0share\u00a0anecdotes about Robbie\u00a0or read\u00a0his songs\u00a0or poems.<\/p>\n

There are a number of items that we need to\u00a0address\u00a0to make this a more successful society.\u00a0This includes increasing membership, increasing participation at\u00a0events,\u00a0and having more active participation of the members. These are items which we will be addressing at future meetings and that I will be discussing\u00a0in future presidential letters.\u00a0There are a number of committees\u00a0to be filled.\u00a0They tend to be\u00a0managed by the same\u00a0people year after year.\u00a0I would very much\u00a0like to have the members\u00a0look at different committees and let me know if there are any that they would be interested in serving on.\u00a0The\u00a0list of committees and the rosters from last year are available online\u00a0in the membership section of the website.\u00a0One\u00a0group of people that are sorely missed\u00a0is ours stewards. Traditionally we have had 3 volunteers that have helped set up for the meeting and other events.\u00a0We have a few trusted members who continue to help with this effort but essentially no real stewards at this time. I would very much appreciate anyone who could step forward for this job. It also comes with some really cool aprons.\u00a0And lastly Lady\u00a0Night\u00a0is\u00a0the second\u00a0Thursday\u00a0in\u00a0March\u00a0and we are all looking for a good turn out that evening.<\/p>\n
